Basic Necropsy Protocols and Sampling Procedures

Course Description: necropsy samples

MMC will be holding a “Basic Necropsy Protocols & Sampling Procedures” training class on Monday, November 7th at 7:30pm. The class will be at the University of Miami and will be part of a training with UM’s Marine Mammal Stranding Team, but all MMC volunteers are highly encouraged to attend!

The course covers:

  • Purpose of a necropsy
  • Personal Safety
  • Equipment
  • Roles on a necropsy team
  • Establishing field identifiers
  • Field necropsy logistics
  • Data sheets and documentation
  • Gross assessment and morphometrics
  • Basic anatomy
  • Codes and sampling
  • Proper packaging and storage of samples
  • Identifying signs of human interaction

Course Fee:  All MMC courses are free for existing and new volunteers, however a $5.00 donation is suggested to help us cover the cost of course materials.
